This paper presents a method for creating “3D sound maps” with a mobile robot. A 3D sound map is a geometric map that shows the probability of emitting sound for all the structures in the environment.

The creation of the map is automated. A mobile robot equipped with a microphone array scans the environment to acquire the acoustic information. This information is fused into the map by combining robot self-localization and sound source localization techniques. The originality of the approach is in the use of acoustic ray casting to perform the information fusion. Using acoustic ray casting enables the creation of sound maps in real time and opens the possibility to use the method for real time monitoring.

When walking indoors, we are often relying on our hearing when reaching a corner in a corridor. We can detect that outside of our field of view another person is coming by the sound of their footsteps. This paper investigates how precisely a robot equipped with a microphone array could detect an incoming person that is out of its field of view at a corner. The proposed approach requires the robot to be able to localize itself in a geometric map of the environment. A sound source localization algorithm picks the footsteps and acoustic ray tracing is used to estimate the footstep origin in the map. With this method, it is possible to restrict the probable position of a footstep origin to a restricted set of locations in the region out of the field of view. Thus it is a first step to the design of a robot that can better negotiate corner to avoid collisions.

Blind source separation is the process that recovers a set of signals, the sources, when only a set of mixtures of these sources are observed. The statistical method called independent component analysis (ICA) is a known solution to this problem when at most one of the sources has a Gaussian distribution. ICA can be seen as principal component analysis (PCA) method working on higher order statistics. If all the sources follow a Gaussian distribution, it is however possible to perform the blind separation if the spectrum of these sources are different or if the sources are not stationary. In this case, the second order statistics of time lagged samples are used. The higher orders and second orders methods are in a sense complementary. This paper introduces a novel method that is based on “order statistics” computed on short windows. Order statistics are the statistics of the ordered samples on these short windows and contain both information on the distribution and the spectrum of the sources. Thus the proposed method can separate a mixture of non-Gaussian sources with same spectrum and Gaussian sources with different spectrum that cannot be separated neither with higher orders nor with second orders methods.
